Meet the Artists of COMMUNITY: Lee Pilz

S|O Gallery is pleased to present the work of sculptor Lee Pilz in COMMUNITY, our inaugural exhibition in Johnson City. Pilz creates abstract plaster sculptures cast in fabric molds, a process that yields organic, flowing forms and ensures that each piece is unique.

Pilz has pursued art throughout his life, working in painting, illustration, printmaking, and sculpture. His skills developed largely through sustained practice and experimentation across media. He studied at The New York Studio School while living in New York City, and later undertook intensive training in casting through classes and workshops at 3-D Atelier in Austin.

After mastering casting in traditional silicone and fiberglass molds, Pilz began working with fabric molds. The fabric responds unpredictably to the weight of the plaster, producing the organic forms he sought and giving every sculpture its own character.

Pilz works in abstraction in order to create objects that engage viewers on their own terms rather than represent something already in the world. He regards ambiguity as essential to art, a quality that captures the imagination and invites closer attention. Sculpture is his preferred medium for the possibilities of three dimensions, and he cites Anish Kapoor, Dale Chihuly, and Mary Oros, artists known for colorful, abstract, organic forms, as influences.

Alongside his studio practice, Pilz built a career in advertising at agencies in New York, Houston, Dallas, and Austin, and taught at Concordia University for six years. His sculptures will be on view throughout COMMUNITY, and he will attend the Artist Reception.
